Why Do My Gums Bleed?

Why Do My Gums Bleed

Bleeding gums are one of the most common signs that something in your mouth needs attention. While it may seem minor, especially if it occurs only when brushing or flossing, gum bleeding is not normal. Healthy gums don’t bleed.

The most common cause is gingivitis, the earliest stage of gum disease, in which plaque builds up along the gumline and triggers inflammation. You may notice redness, puffiness, or bleeding when brushing. Gingivitis is reversible, but only with proper professional care and home cleaning. It doesn’t resolve on its own.

If bleeding has been present for a while, it may indicate periodontitis, a more advanced form of gum disease where the supporting bone and tissues begin to break down. This stage often progresses silently, and many patients don’t feel pain until significant damage has occurred. Early diagnosis by your dentist or periodontist is the key to preventing long-term consequences.

Other factors can also contribute:

Hormonal changes, medications that affect blood flow, smoking, nutritional deficiencies, or brushing too aggressively. Even so, persistent bleeding should always be assessed professionally to determine the exact cause.

The important takeaway is this:

Bleeding gums are a message, not a normal variation. The sooner the underlying issue is identified, the simpler and more effective the treatment. A dentist or periodontist can perform a thorough examination, measure gum health, and tailor a plan to restore your gums to a healthy state.

If you’re noticing bleeding, now is the right time to seek clarity and reassurance, and to prevent small problems from becoming bigger ones. Book an appointment so we can help you get your gum health back on track.
