SINUS LIFT SURGERY: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Sinus Lift Procedures Melbourne CBD
A sinus lift is a surgical procedure that is necessary when there isn’t sufficient bone in the upper jaw to accommodate an implant.
A sinus lift involves adding bone to the upper jaw in the area of the molars and premolars.
This procedure is also called a sinus augmentation. The bone is surgically added in between the jaw and the maxillary sinus present on either side of your nose.
The maxillary sinuses are above your upper teeth and behind your cheeks.
The sinuses are basically empty spaces filled with air. To make space to add the bone, the sinus membrane must be lifted up, hence the term ‘Sinus Lift’.
Why It’s Done
If you don’t have insufficient upper jawbone, the dental implant can’t properly anchor, and your new dental implant can’t perform more demanding tasks, such as chewing.
Without insufficient bone, the dental implant won’t properly secure and can fail.
Some of the factors why you may have experienced jawbone loss include:
- birth defects
- natural variation, where your sinus cavities are very large or the jawbone is very thin
- gum disease
Also, the jawbone can be a use-it-or-lose-it prospect.
If you experience tooth loss, your jawbone may start to get thinner over time.
When do you need a Sinus Lift Procedure?
The sinus lift procedure may be necessary when the sinuses are too close to the upper jaw or when there isn’t sufficient bone in the upper jaw to accommodate a dental implant. There are several reasons why someone may need a sinus lift.
- Loss of teeth in the upper jaw for an extended period of time can result in the bone being reabsorbed. This makes an implant difficult since there isn’t enough bone to hold them in place.
- It is possible to lose bone in the jaw due to gum disease. If there isn’t enough bone to fix an implant, then you may need a sinus lift procedure.
- The size and shape of the maxillary sinus differ among people of different age. If the maxillary sinus is very close to the upper jaw, this may cause problems during an implant.
