Wisdom Teeth: Do I Need to Have Them Removed?

by | Mar 22, 2021 | Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth removal is a procedure to remove one or more wisdom teeth — the four permanent teeth located at the back corners of your mouth (top and bottom).

Although most people have wisdom teeth, it is possible for some or all of the third molars to never develop. It is also possible for a person to have more than four wisdom teeth.

In many individuals, the wisdom teeth aren’t visible because they have become impacted (not normally erupted through the gums) under the gingival tissue.

Do I Need to Have Them Removed?

When wisdom teeth cause significant problems, or X-rays show they might down the line, they need to be extracted.

Other reasons to take them out include the following:

#1. Damage to Neighbouring Teeth

The extra set of molars can push your other teeth around, causing mouth pain and bite alignment problems.

#2. Jaw Damage

Cysts can form around the new teeth. If left ignored, they could hollow out your jaw and damage sensitive nerves.

#3. Sinus Problems

Wisdom teeth problems can lead to sinus pain, pressure, and congestion.

#4. Inflamed Gums

Tissues surrounding the area can swell and may be difficult to clean.

#5. Cavities

Swollen gums can create pockets in between teeth that help bacteria grow and cavities form.

#6. Alignment

Impacted wisdom teeth can cause crowding of other teeth and even make treatment to straighten other teeth necessary.

Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed.

When a wisdom tooth comes out cleanly through the tissue without harming the neighbouring tooth, the wisdom tooth can be kept in the mouth with little concern as long as you are able to brush, floss, and clean it thoroughly.

Sometimes the wisdom teeth can cause pain, but you can avoid extracting them with a few modifications to the surrounding tissues or oral hygiene habits.
